Magtec is a UK based company specialising in the design, development, manufacturing, installation and repowering of electric drive systems and components. They cater to a wide range of vehicle types, including commercial heavy goods vehicles, buses, off-road multi-wheeled and tracked defense vehicles and bespoke specialist vehicles.
Magtec required a telematics system for their electric vehicles to provide their customers with easy access to comprehensive vehicle data. The goal was to enable customers to monitor vehicle functionality, understand performance, and track energy consumption, even in scenarios where cellular service is lost.
To address this need, Hubit collaborated with Owasys and Magtec to design and integrate a versatile, plug-and-play telematics system for electric vehicles. The solution is centered around the owa450 device, which features LTE communication and dual Controller Area Network (CAN) inputs to capture data from various sources, including GPS and devices using J1939 and CAN/Open protocols.
The system’s agnostic design allows for seamless connectivity to any CAN network, with data logging beginning immediately upon connection. In situations where cellular connectivity is lost, the owa450 employs buffering mechanisms to temporarily store data until service is restored.
